Hamburg sits where the Southtowns meet Lake Erie, and that shapes how a car gets picked up here. Most of our Hamburg car shipping runs stage off NYS Thruway Exit 57 at Route 75 or Exit 56 at Mile Strip Road, then work in along Camp Road, Southwestern Boulevard or Lake Shore Road. Our office at 4581 Lake Shore Rd #808, Hamburg, NY 14075 is on Route 5 along the shore, and the dispatcher who answers (716) 599-8067 knows the difference between a driveway in Lake View and a condo lot off McKinley Parkway.

Hamburg auto transport is not the same job as a downtown Buffalo pickup. Out here the issues are narrow village streets, long rural roads through Eden and Boston, Bills traffic on Abbott Road, the August fair at the fairgrounds, and snow bands that can shut the Thruway from Hamburg to Silver Creek with no notice. We book open and enclosed carriers nationwide and plan each one around those realities.

Where the trucks actually load in Hamburg and the Southtowns

Hamburg village's Main Street and Buffalo Street are fine for your sedan but not for a nine-car rig, and the same goes for the older streets around the village green and most of the lake-side lanes off Route 5 in Woodlawn, Athol Springs and Wanakah. There the driver will meet you within a mile or two instead of at the curb.

The meeting points we use most often:

  • McKinley Mall at Milestrip Road and McKinley Parkway, right off Thruway Exit 56. The outer ring of the lot is the standard Southtowns handoff.
  • Walmart and Home Depot lots on Milestrip Road in Blasdell and Hamburg, best early in the morning before they fill.
  • Quaker Crossing and the plazas along Southwestern Boulevard (Route 20) in Orchard Park, handy for anyone coming up Route 219 from Boston or Springville.
  • The Camp Road plazas near Exit 57, where a driver has room to turn around.

For enclosed shipments of a Corvette or a restored Mustang, we will often send the driver to the house anyway, since a single-level enclosed trailer tucks into a driveway on Big Tree Road or Pleasant Avenue more easily.

Thruway exits, Route 5 and the 219: how carriers get in and out

Almost every truck heading west on I-90 toward Erie and Cleveland passes within a few miles of town. Thruway Exits 56, 57 and 57A each put a driver on a wide road within minutes, so Hamburg pickups pair easily with a Buffalo or Lackawanna load the same day. That matters for price: a driver who fills two spots in the Southtowns before heading toward Dunkirk will accept a more competitive rate.

Route 5 along the lake is the other artery. From the north it runs over the Skyway and past the former Bethlehem Steel property in Lackawanna, though the Skyway closes to high-profile vehicles in heavy wind. Drivers coming up Route 5 through Evans, Derby and Angola have a flat run to our stretch of Lake Shore Road.

Inland, Route 219 is the expressway spine from the Thruway through Orchard Park to Springville, and we use it for pickups in Boston, Colden and the hills around Kissing Bridge. Route 400 does the same for East Aurora, Elma and Holland, and West Seneca sits where the 400 and the 90 meet. If you live well off those corridors, say on Route 240 or a seasonal road in Colden, tell us at booking so we can quote a meeting point.

Bills games and the Erie County Fair: two dates that move pickups

Carriers coming from out of state do not know this. On a Bills home Sunday in the fall, the roads around Highmark Stadium and the new stadium rising across Abbott Road are closed or crawling from mid-morning until well after the final whistle. Southwestern Boulevard, Abbott, Big Tree Road and California Road back up for miles, and the Thruway exits feeding Orchard Park clog as well. We do not schedule Orchard Park, Hamburg or West Seneca pickups on home-game Sundays from September through January. If your window lands on a game weekend, we book Friday or Monday instead.

The other date is the Erie County Fair in mid-August. The fairgrounds on South Park Avenue pull hundreds of thousands of visitors over twelve days, and overflow parking spreads across the nearby fields. The fairgrounds lot is a useful place to meet a hauler the rest of the year, but during fair week Route 62, McKinley Parkway and Clark Street are slow and the lots are full. Plan an August pickup before the fair opens or a few days after it closes.

Lake-effect bands and why Southtowns residents ship in late October

The Southtowns take the brunt of lake-effect snow off Lake Erie. The bands often set up along a line through Hamburg, Orchard Park and Boston, and when they stall they bury this area while the Northtowns see flurries. November 2014, the storm everyone still calls Snowvember, dropped six to seven feet on parts of Hamburg and Orchard Park in a few days. The November 2022 storm did it again. Both times the Thruway closed between Hamburg and Silver Creek and cars sat in driveways for a week.

That is why car shipping from Hamburg follows its own calendar. Snowbirds headed to Fort Myers, Naples or The Villages book pickup for the second half of October, before the first serious bands form. Waiting until mid-November is a gamble: a carrier that cannot get off the Thruway will not reach a driveway in Lake View, and a sedan buried in a drift cannot be loaded.

The other Southtowns habit is the winter beater. Plenty of people keep an old all-wheel-drive Subaru for the season and ship the good car south, or ship a newly bought car in from a warmer state and garage it until the salt is gone. Enclosed transport makes sense for that car.

Who ships cars from Hamburg, Orchard Park and the Lake Shore

The biggest share of our Hamburg auto transport work is retirees splitting the year between the Southtowns and the Gulf Coast. Fort Myers, Naples, Sarasota and Port St. Lucie dominate, with The Villages close behind and a steady stream to Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tucson.

Relocations are the second group. The Ford Stamping Plant in Woodlawn and the redevelopment of the old Bethlehem Steel site in Lackawanna bring workers in and out, and transfers often need a second car moved with the household goods. Families leaving for the Carolinas are common enough that Charlotte and Raleigh have well-known pockets of Buffalo transplants, and that is one of our busiest summer lanes.

Hilbert College and Erie Community College South students sometimes ship a car in rather than drive it through a Western New York winter. Bills players and staff arriving for the season or leaving after it tend to want enclosed service on short notice, which this office can usually handle. Then there are the summer people: owners of lake houses from Athol Springs down past 18 Mile Creek and Evans Town Park, who bring a convertible up for July and send it home in September.

Short hauls west on I-90 and south on the 219

Because I-90 runs straight west from here, Erie, Cleveland and the rest of Ohio are quick, inexpensive lanes, often one day door to door. Pittsburgh is reachable down Route 219 to I-79, or by I-90 and I-79 through Erie, and we move cars that way for people transferring between Western New York and Western Pennsylvania employers, or for kids heading to school there.

Short hauls are priced differently than a Florida run. A carrier will not dedicate a spot for a 200-mile trip unless it fits a route the truck is already driving, so give us a three-day window and we can usually place a Hamburg to Cleveland or Pittsburgh car on a truck already passing Exit 57.

Inoperable vehicles and project cars bought off a farm in Eden or North Collins need a carrier with a winch, a smaller pool of trucks on regional lanes. Tell us up front and we will quote it correctly.

Questions from Hamburg customers

Can a car hauler pick up on my street in Hamburg village or do I have to meet it?

It depends on the street. Main Street and Buffalo Street in the village, and most of the short lanes off Route 5 in Woodlawn and Athol Springs, are too tight for a full-size hauler. There the driver will usually ask to meet at McKinley Mall or a Milestrip Road lot a few minutes away. Wider streets off Camp Road or Big Tree Road are often fine for direct pickup.

I live in Orchard Park near the stadium. Can you pick up on a Bills game weekend?

We avoid it. Abbott Road, Southwestern Boulevard and Big Tree Road are closed or jammed for most of a home-game Sunday, and carriers lose hours trying to get through. We schedule Orchard Park pickups for weekdays or non-game weekends in the fall. If your date is fixed, we can meet at Quaker Crossing on Southwestern Boulevard early Saturday morning before traffic builds.

When should a Hamburg snowbird book a car to Florida?

Aim for a pickup in the second half of October. The Southtowns get the worst of the lake-effect bands, and once the Thruway closes between Hamburg and Silver Creek, as it did in November 2014 and November 2022, carriers cannot reach driveways here. Booking two to three weeks ahead of a late-October pickup gives you the best rates and the least weather risk.

Is it cheaper to ship from Hamburg than from downtown Buffalo?

The rates are essentially the same. Hamburg sits right on the Thruway at Exits 56 and 57, so a carrier heading west on I-90 reaches you as easily as a downtown garage. What changes the price is the destination, the season and whether the car runs. Figure roughly $800 to $900 to southwest Florida and $650 to $750 to Charlotte or Raleigh on an open carrier for a running sedan.

I bought a classic for the lake house near Evans Town Park. Should it go enclosed?

For a classic, a convertible or anything with fresh paint, yes. Open transport is fine for a daily driver, but a car headed to the shore in Derby or Angola for the summer and back out in September is worth protecting from road debris both ways. Enclosed service from Hamburg runs about 40 to 60 percent more than open and usually requires a bit more lead time.
