Car shipping from Buffalo is a different job than shipping from downstate, and we dispatch it that way. Our Buffalo office is at 610 Main Street, City Centre #306, a few blocks from the Theater District and Canalside, and the local line is (716) 526-8284. From here we book open and enclosed carriers for everything Western New York actually moves: snowbird cars headed to Fort Myers and Naples in November, a graduate's sedan leaving UB North Campus in May, a surgeon's second car arriving at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, and a Copart purchase that needs to get from a yard off Route 5 to a buyer in Ohio.
Buffalo auto transport runs on the I-90 Thruway corridor. Carriers coming east from Chicago and Cleveland, or south from the Peace Bridge, stage along the Thruway and I-290 in Amherst and Cheektowaga before working into the city. Knowing that is how we quote honest pickup windows, and how we keep a hauler from trying to thread a 75-foot rig down a one-way street in Allentown in February.
Downtown pickups, neighborhood streets and suburban plazas
Where a car sits in Erie County decides how the pickup goes. Downtown, many customers live in converted lofts along Main Street, in the Theater District or near Canalside, and their cars live in ramp garages with low clearance. A ten-car hauler cannot enter those garages, so the driver will ask you to bring the car to street level or a wide pull-off near the Erie Basin lots.
Elmwood Village, Allentown and the West Side are tighter still: narrow two-sided parking, mature trees, and snowbanks that eat a lane from December through March. North Buffalo around Hertel Avenue and the Parkside blocks near Delaware Park are a little easier. South Buffalo, Kaisertown, Black Rock and Riverside have more driveways and wider arterials like South Park Avenue and Niagara Street, which drivers like.
In the suburbs, the hauler-friendly spots are obvious. The Walden Galleria lots in Cheektowaga, the Boulevard Mall area along Niagara Falls Boulevard in Amherst, Transit Road plazas in Williamsville and Depew, and the big box lots in Hamburg off McKinley Parkway all have the turning room a loaded trailer needs. If you are in Orchard Park, East Aurora, Clarence or Lancaster on a rural road, we will often set the meet at a nearby plaza.
How carriers move through Western New York
Almost every car we ship from Buffalo touches the Thruway. Westbound loads to Chicago and the Midwest leave on I-90 past the Lackawanna tolls. Southbound loads to the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida typically go I-90 to I-79 at Erie and drop down through Pittsburgh, or use Route 400 and Route 219 when the driver has a Southern Tier stop.
In the metro, I-190 runs from downtown up to Grand Island and Niagara Falls, I-290 cuts across Tonawanda and Amherst to UB North Campus, and the Route 33 Kensington Expressway is the fastest path from the airport in Cheektowaga to the medical campus. The Route 5 Skyway is a different story: carriers avoid it in high wind and whenever the lake throws snow, so a Lackawanna or Hamburg pickup usually routes via South Park or the Thruway instead.
The Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston and Rainbow Bridge connect us to Ontario, and we get asked about Canada constantly. We ship to and from the US side of the border region, including Niagara Falls, Lewiston and Lockport, and we can walk you through what crossing requires: export and import customs paperwork, a title clear of liens, and a customs broker on the Canadian side. We do not promise Canadian delivery.
Lake-effect winters are why Buffalo ships instead of drives
Lake Erie is the reason this office stays busy from November to March. Lake-effect bands can drop a foot of snow on South Buffalo, West Seneca, Orchard Park and Hamburg while Amherst gets flurries, and the Thruway between Buffalo and Erie closes to commercial traffic more winters than not. Driving your own car to Florida in January means crossing that stretch, then the Pennsylvania hills, with salt on everything.
Salt is the other reason. Erie County roads are treated heavily and most older Buffalo cars carry rust in the rocker panels and subframes. A car that spends the winter in a Naples garage instead of a Kenmore driveway simply lasts longer, and a lot of WNY snowbirds have decided the shipping fee is cheaper than another winter of corrosion plus the drive.
- Book October pickups early. Snowbird demand from Buffalo peaks in the last two weeks of October and the first two of November, and spring returns peak late March into April.
- Winter pickups in the Southtowns can slip a day when a band sets up. We tell you that before you book.
- Wash the undercarriage before pickup. Drivers inspect for existing damage, and salt crust hides it.
Open or enclosed for a Buffalo car
Most Buffalo shipments go open. A daily-driver Subaru heading to Charlotte or a Silverado going to a job in Dallas does fine on an open trailer.
Enclosed is popular here for a specific reason: a lot of people in Clarence, East Aurora, Williamsville and Orchard Park keep a summer car that never sees salt. Corvettes, Mustangs, Porsches and older restored cars that spend December through April under a cover in a heated garage. When those owners retire south, they do not want the car's first exposure to winter to be a salt-spray ride down I-79 in an open rack. Enclosed also makes sense for an auction buy going straight to a customer who expects it detailed. Expect roughly 40 to 60 percent more than the open rate, and extra lead time in winter because fewer enclosed trucks work the Thruway.
Who is shipping a car out of Buffalo right now
Snowbirds are the biggest group. Fort Myers, Naples and Sarasota are full of WNY plates every winter, and Phoenix pulls a steady share too. The car we take to Fort Myers in November is often the one we bring back to Tonawanda in April.
Students are the second wave. University at Buffalo moves thousands of cars at the ends of each semester between North Campus in Amherst, South Campus on Main Street, and home. Buffalo State on Elmwood and Canisius on Main add to the May rush. Parents usually meet the driver in a Boulevard Mall lot rather than at a dorm.
Then there are relocations. The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and Roswell Park bring in physicians, nurses and researchers who ship a car ahead and fly in. M&T Bank and the downtown employers have people moving both ways. And the quieter trend is people moving back: former Buffalonians in Austin or Denver who want a house on a North Buffalo street and are shipping the car along with the furniture. Bills season adds its own traffic, with out-of-state fans shipping vehicles for the fall and the new stadium project in Orchard Park bringing contractors and their trucks into town.
Short hauls to Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Erie, plus auction cars
Buffalo sits closer to Cleveland than to New York City, and short-haul lanes are a large part of our work. Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Erie are day runs, and Chicago is a one-to-two-day lane carriers fill constantly. A running sedan to Cleveland or Pittsburgh typically lands between $350 and $500, and Chicago runs $500 to $600 on an open truck.
Those lanes also carry auction cars. Buyers in the Buffalo area pick up vehicles at Manheim and ADESA sales across the region, and from Copart yards, then need them moved without a dealer plate or a second driver. We handle gate releases and auction pickup windows regularly, and we will tell you up front if a non-running car needs a winch truck.
If you would rather hand the car off somewhere neutral, Buffalo Niagara International Airport in Cheektowaga is the common meeting point. Carriers coming off the Thruway at Exit 51 can reach the airport cell lot and the Genesee Street plazas without entering the city, which works when you are flying out the same day. Call (716) 526-8284 and we will set a time that matches the driver's route.

Questions from Buffalo customers
I live in Elmwood Village with street parking only. Can a carrier pick up on my block?
Usually not on the block itself. Elmwood, Bidwell and the side streets are too narrow for a full-size hauler, especially with winter snowbanks. The driver will typically ask to meet on a wider stretch like Delaware Avenue near Gates Circle or in a plaza lot. We arrange that spot with you before dispatch so there are no surprises.
Can you ship my car from Buffalo to my daughter in Toronto or Hamilton?
We ship to the US side of the border, including Niagara Falls, Lewiston and the Peace Bridge area, and we can explain what a crossing requires: export filing with US Customs, a lien-free title, Canadian import paperwork and a customs broker on the Ontario side. We do not deliver into Canada ourselves, and we will tell you that honestly rather than promise it.
How early should a snowbird in Orchard Park or Hamburg book for Fort Myers?
Two to three weeks ahead for late October and early November is ideal. That window is the busiest of the year out of Buffalo, and the Southtowns can see the first lake-effect bands before Thanksgiving. Booking early locks a better rate and gives us room to move the pickup a day if the Thruway closes near Lackawanna.
My UB student is on North Campus in Amherst. Where does the driver meet us?
Not at the dorm. Flint Loop and the Ellicott Complex roads are not built for a ten-car trailer. The usual meet is a lot off Maple Road, the Boulevard Mall area on Niagara Falls Boulevard, or a Transit Road plaza in Williamsville. We confirm the exact spot with the driver the day before so you are not circling with a packed car.
I bought a car at a Manheim sale and it is sitting at the yard. Can you handle the pickup?
Yes. We work with auction gate releases and pickup windows regularly, and the Thruway lanes to and from the Ohio and Pennsylvania sales are ones our carriers run every week. Tell us whether the car starts and drives. If it does not, we assign a truck with a winch, which costs a bit more but avoids a failed pickup at the gate.
