Car shipping in Brookhaven means two different things, and we handle both. There is the hamlet of Brookhaven itself, the quiet stretch of South Country Road between Bellport and Shirley where our office sits at 418 S Country Rd #306. Then there is the Town of Brookhaven, the largest township on Long Island, running from the Great South Bay to the Long Island Sound and taking in Patchogue, Medford, Coram, Selden, Yaphank, Port Jefferson, Stony Brook and roughly two dozen more hamlets. Big Apple Car Shipping dispatches carriers to every one of them.
Central Suffolk is one of the easier parts of New York to ship a car from. Lots are wide, driveways are long, and most streets off Montauk Highway, Route 112 or Route 25A can take a ten-car hauler. That is a real contrast with Queens or Brooklyn, where nearly every pickup is a negotiated meeting point. Here, the truck usually comes to the house. Call (631) 490-7723 or get an instant quote online and we will tell you straight whether your street is one of the exceptions.
Two shores, one town: pickups from Port Jefferson down to Patchogue
On the north side, Route 25A threads through Setauket, Stony Brook, Port Jefferson, Mount Sinai, Miller Place and Rocky Point. It is hilly, it narrows in the old village centers, and side streets near Port Jeff harbor or the Setauket Mill Pond were laid out long before anyone imagined a 75-foot car carrier. Pickups there often happen at the bottom of the hill or at a nearby lot, and we tell you that up front. The Port Jefferson ferry to Bridgeport, Connecticut also matters: a car coming from New England can skip I-95 and the Throgs Neck and land on Route 112 in about 75 minutes.
On the south side, South Country Road, Montauk Highway and Sunrise Highway run parallel through Bellport, Brookhaven hamlet, Shirley, Mastic and Mastic Beach, with William Floyd Parkway cutting between them. The land is flat, the grid is wide, and a hauler can usually pull right up to a house. Patchogue is the one South Shore spot where we plan around traffic: Main Street fills on summer weekends with Fire Island ferry riders bound for Davis Park and Watch Hill, so a Saturday pickup near the docks gets scheduled early.
Where the trucks actually run: LIE exits 62 through 68 and William Floyd Parkway
Every long-haul car carrier serving central Suffolk is working off the Long Island Expressway. The exits that matter for the Town of Brookhaven are 62 (Nicolls Road, CR 97), 63 (North Ocean Avenue), 64 (Route 112), 65 (Horseblock Road), 66 (Sills Road), 67 (Yaphank Avenue) and 68 (William Floyd Parkway). A driver with a full trailer bound for Florida will not wander ten miles off the LIE for one car unless the rate reflects it, so distance to an exit is part of how we price your pickup.
Nicolls Road is the cross-island connector, running from Stony Brook University past Suffolk County Community College in Selden, under the LIE at exit 62, and down to Patchogue. If you live in Centereach, Selden, Lake Grove or Farmingville, a carrier can reach you from Nicolls Road without touching a residential cut-through.
William Floyd Parkway does the same job further east, linking the Shoreham area on the Sound to Shirley, Mastic and Smith Point on the ocean side, passing Brookhaven National Laboratory and Calabro Airport along the way. For customers in Ridge, Yaphank and the Mastics, exit 68 is the natural hand-off, and the big lots along the parkway in Shirley make easy meeting spots when a street is too tight.
Brookhaven auto transport for the lab, the university and the airport
Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton brings in scientists, engineers and postdocs from labs and universities across the country, often for one to three years. Many drive out from the Midwest or West Coast, then ship the car home when the appointment ends rather than repeat the trip. We handle a steady flow between Ridge, Yaphank, Middle Island and Shirley and destinations like Chicago, Oak Ridge and the Bay Area.
Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine create the same pattern on the North Shore. Visiting faculty, residents at the hospital and graduate students arrive in August and leave in May, and plenty want a car for the year without the drive. Full-size haulers cannot work the campus itself, so we typically meet near the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove, along Nesconset Highway, or at a quieter address in Setauket.
Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma sits just west of the town line. Carriers like the area because the LIE, Sunrise Highway and Veterans Memorial Highway all meet within a few miles. A pickup near the airport or the Ronkonkoma LIRR hub tends to get collected a day or two faster than one deep in Mastic Beach.
Snowbirds, students and second homes: why people ship a car from Brookhaven, NY
- Retirees heading south. Leisure Village, Leisure Knoll and the other 55-and-over communities in Ridge send a wave of cars to Florida every October and November and bring them back in April. The Villages, Fort Myers, Boca Raton and Sarasota are the regulars.
- Families moving off the Island. Suffolk property taxes push plenty of households to the Carolinas, Georgia and Texas. A two-car family in Medford or Holbrook often drives one car and ships the other, which beats two drivers and two sets of hotel nights.
- Students and parents. A car shipped from Selden or Coram to a campus in Florida or Arizona saves a parent a week of vacation spent driving it down.
- Hamptons weekenders. East End traffic comes straight through on Sunrise and Montauk Highway, and some second-home owners in Bellport and along the Shirley bayfront ship a car between New York and Florida with the seasons.
Whatever the reason, the quote takes the same four things: pickup and delivery zip codes, the vehicle, whether it runs, and your earliest ready date.
Open or enclosed on Long Island's central stretch
Most cars leaving the Town of Brookhaven go open, and that is the right call for a daily driver. Two local conditions push people toward enclosed.
Winter is the first. Between December and March the salt and brine on the LIE and Sunrise Highway are heavy, and a car on the lower deck of an open hauler through a nor'easter picks up whatever the truck ahead kicks up. If you are shipping a garage-kept convertible out of Bellport or a restored car from a Setauket collector in February, enclosed is worth the premium of roughly 40 to 60 percent.
Summer is the second. Sand and pollen blow across the South Shore, and anything shipped the week it was detailed will not arrive that way. An ordinary sedan going to Florida does not need the upgrade; a show car out of Port Jefferson or Miller Place does. Enclosed trailers are also shorter and lower, which occasionally matters where a tree-lined lane in Old Field or Belle Terre will not clear a tall open rig.
Meeting points when the hauler cannot make your street
Even in a wide-lot town there are streets that do not work: dead ends off Harbor Road in Port Jeff, the beach blocks in Mastic Beach, the Patchogue village core, and private roads in the North Shore incorporated villages. When that happens we agree on a spot before the truck is dispatched, not while the driver is circling.
The ones that work consistently:
- Patchogue downtown municipal lots off West Avenue, outside Friday and Saturday evenings. Easy for Patchogue, Blue Point, Bellport and Brookhaven hamlet.
- Ronkonkoma LIRR station, where the big commuter lots and direct access to the LIE and Veterans Highway make it the most carrier-friendly location in the area. Good for Holbrook, Holtsville, Farmingville and Lake Grove.
- Smith Haven Mall perimeter in Lake Grove for Stony Brook, Setauket, Centereach and Selden.
- The commercial strip along William Floyd Parkway in Shirley for Mastic, Mastic Beach, Ridge and Yaphank.
- Our office on South Country Road in Brookhaven hamlet if you would rather hand over the keys somewhere familiar.

Questions from Brookhaven customers
Can a car carrier actually get to my house in Shirley or Medford, or will I have to meet somewhere?
In most of the South Shore and mid-island hamlets, yes, the truck comes to the house. Streets off William Floyd Parkway, Montauk Highway and Route 112 are generally wide enough for a full-size hauler. The exceptions are cul-de-sacs with tight turnarounds, low tree canopies and private roads. Tell us your cross streets when you book and we will confirm before dispatch.
I am at Brookhaven National Laboratory on a two-year appointment. How do I ship my car back to the Midwest when it ends?
Give us about two weeks of notice and your last day in Upton. We schedule a pickup from your housing in Ridge, Yaphank or wherever you are living, or meet along William Floyd Parkway if that is simpler. Chicago and the Midwest run roughly 3 to 5 days on an open carrier, and you can fly out the same day the car is picked up.
I live in Leisure Village in Ridge and go to Florida every November. When should I book?
Book two to three weeks ahead for a November pickup. The snowbird rush out of Suffolk peaks from late October through mid-November, and carriers fill fast. Pickups inside the community are usually done at the clubhouse lot or just outside the gate since the interior lanes are tight. Expect 3 to 5 days to most of Florida on an open carrier.
My street in Port Jefferson is steep and narrow. What are my options?
You have three. Meet the driver at the bottom of the hill on Route 25A or near the ferry terminal lots, meet at the Smith Haven Mall perimeter in Lake Grove about fifteen minutes away, or request an enclosed carrier, which is shorter and sometimes clears streets an open rig cannot. We will tell you which the assigned driver prefers before the pickup date.
Does summer Hamptons traffic on Sunrise Highway delay pickups in Bellport and Patchogue?
It can push a Friday afternoon or Sunday pickup by a few hours, which is why we schedule South Shore pickups between Memorial Day and Labor Day for mornings or midweek. Drivers also avoid Montauk Highway through Patchogue on summer weekends because of Fire Island ferry traffic. Transit time to your destination is not affected once the car is loaded.
